One in five professionals in the IT space are considering taking up a freelance role.

That’s according to a recent report from Nigel Frank International and Dynamic-Jobs.com, who surveyed more than 16,000 Microsoft Dynamics specialists as part of an annual salary survey.

The 21.2% figure is more than double that in the same report from 2015, which showed just 9.7% were considering a freelance role.

According to the survey, the chief reasons for considering such a change were a lack of career and promotional prospects, poor leadership and vision, and company culture and training. These are all factors that can be countered by taking a freelance or contractor role.

“With contracted roles offering candidates flexibility and a better work/life balance, it’s little surprise more IT professionals are considering the freelance route,” said Dan Hackney, Senior Manager of Contracts at Nigel Frank International.
