A new survey covering workers in Europe and the US has found that 97% of contractors are happier than full employees.

Independent work: Choice, necessity, and the gig economy from research firm McKinsey Global Institute has found what many have known for a long time – contractors in the main enjoy greater job satisfaction.

The survey estimates around 14 million people in the UK are now their own boss and independent workers, and found that three quarters of that figure do so out of choice.

Of this 14 million figure, 32% were found to be working as contractors. This indicates a growing awareness of the benefits of the contractor work, and the freedom it can bring.

The contractors that were surveyed reported higher job satisfaction than their full-employee counterparts in a number of key areas. These included development opportunities, assignments, recognition and income.

The survey further indicates that now is an opportune time to enter the contracting world.
